day #23 & day #24

Day 23 → A YouTube video

This is one of my favourite, if not my favourite Bowie video. I love how he smiles, like he’s about to crack up, and the horrible hair and outfit and the red boots! … I love the song and how he looks like so much fun.

Day 24 → Whatever tickles your fancy

I tend to adapt to the language of what I read at that moment. You just have to read a normal post when I don’t read anything and one that I wrote when having read for example a Hornby book before. It’s not that I start having great literary talent all of a sudden, I just write different from my usual style and more like the authors. I’m reading Catcher in the Rye at the moment, so I adapted a little to the way Salinger makes Holden think/talk (not in this post though)…it’s probably hard to see if you don’t really know my writing style…anyway~ whatever!

day #16

Day 16 → A song that makes you cry (or nearly)

Obviously what makes you cry when hearing a song is not the song itself but the associations you have with it, except for when it is a Mariah Carey song, that just hurts. (yeah, you didn’t think I’d not do that, right?)

You could probably throw the Ballad Best album of Exile into the cd player or let Alex Band sing ballades and I’d cry like a little kid over a dead penguin.

I chose a different song though. Aoi Tori by the Gospellers. The lyrics are so sentimental, it’s really beautiful.

day #01

ok, so I really don’t have much to talk about, so I’ll stick with that meme, might at least keep me posting for a month…maybe…

Day 01 → Your favourite song

Wonderwall is the only song I never, never get sick of hearing. As soon as I hear the first few seconds of the song I immediately think “god, I love this song!”. I love to hum and sing it, too. It makes me happy the second it goes on, really.

(Next in line are R.E.M. - Losing my Religion and David Bowie - Life on Mars)

Last.fm Best of 2009

Yeah, as if I would write a proper review. Me, never! I don’t like to pretend I have one of those topic-based blogs, cause really, I don’t!

Anyway, last.fm went around collecting scrobbles for 2009 and made a best of list. Top 5 are as follows:

I love Franz Ferdinand, but I've been kinda neglecting their newest work. I listened to one of their older songs a while ago and now I want to listen to their stuff again, but that's kinda difficult with a broken stereo...

The big comeback this year...the music isn't my cup of tea, never has been. Actually Keith Flint scared me when I was younger. 11 year old girls don't really get punk I guess

I like Lily Allen a lot. It's also pretty amazing how her second album was a complete 360°. You'd think it would be worse, but it's really different but still really good.

How come a lot of bands get big when I'm over them already? I liked Mr. Brightside and Hot Fuss, but I didn't really keep track of them after that...

Surprise, surprise! Shocking revelation there. I like her music, the only problem I have is, that most of the time it's about everything else BUT the music...oh, and I can't stand it when she mentions her own name in songs.

All in all I’m not overly excited about those results, but really there have been worse.

RS Top 500 Albums - #283, #245, #320, #26

nick-drakeNick Drake #283 - Five Leaves Left, #245 - Bryter Layter, #320 - Pink Moon
I actually listen to Nick Drake because I was reading a book it was mentioned in (a long way down – Nick Hornby), then I realized I actually had heard his music before.

I kind of find that Nick Drake sounds like he invented melancholy, and I like how his songs sound both simple and complicated at the same time.

I also think it’s really not music for everyone, and you certainly can’t listen to it all the time, there is a reason why he wasn’t popular during his lifetime after all.

I can’t really decide on a favourite album, I like them all and I can really see why all Nick Drake albums are in the RS Top 500.

u2-thejoshuatree#26 U2 - The Joshua Tree
I think U2 is highly overrated. I’m not saying they are bad, they have some great songs, but I still don’t think they are as awesome as some people want to make you believe. However, you have to have done something right when most people know at least three of your songs at the top of their head. That’s not a fact, just my humble guess, but go on, try, you know at least three. And I bet those three songs are from Joshua Tree.

Joshua Tree is a really good album and I like it a lot, I just think it’s solid rock music. It’s nice to listen to, but it doesn’t turn your world upside down.

(Three U2 songs you most likely know: Where the streets have no name, I still haven’t found what I’m looking for, With or without you. The first three songs on Joshua Tree.)
